Words of the Week #4

Afternoon all! How has everyone been?

I took a brief break from my blog because the last few weeks have been hectic to say the least. My ‘Word of the Week’ has a strong connection with that- it’s a word I’ve read or said a lot recently:

Application

According to the Oxford Dictionary (I read the online version), there are a few meanings of this word. There are two that I want to draw out.

  • A formal request to be considered for a position or to be allowed to do or have something, submitted to an authority, institution, or organization.
  • The action of putting something into operation.

The origins of the word ‘application’ can be found in Late Middle English languages. The Old French version derived from the Latin applicatio(n-), from the verb applicare. I always find it incredible that some words change so little over time, like this, whereas some seem totally unconnected to their original versions.

I have been completing many ‘applications’ in the last few weeks in order to ‘put things into operation’. I can’t say exactly what these things are just yet, because I want everything to be finalised completely first, but as soon as I can tell you, I will. Though some days have felt overwhelming, it’s exciting to have this to look forward to.

That’s all I’ll say for now!

In other news, I’ve started reading The Corset, by Laura Purcell this week via The Pigeon Hole. It’s a deliciously dark novel and the build up of tension is so well served by the serialisation that is offered in this format. I’d highly recommend check both the book (published in hardback this week) and the reading platform out.

I hope you’ve all had a great few weeks. Has anything memorable stood out from your reading?

  1. Glad to hear you’re enjoying The Corset so far! I loved Laura Purcell’s The Silent Companions and cannot wait to get my hands on a copy of her latest.
